What is a Functional Fitness MOT?

Our Functional Fitness MOT is a simple, friendly assessment designed to help people aged 60 and over understand their current levels of strength, balance and flexibility. It provides an indication of how well someone can perform everyday activities and identifies areas where they may benefit from support.

The assessment uses a series of evidence-based functional fitness tests that are safe, practical and relevant to daily life. These can include activities such as sitting and standing from a chair, flexibility assessments and balance measures.

Why have a Functional Fitness MOT?

As we age, maintaining strength, balance and flexibility become increasingly important for staying independent, active and confident. A Functional Fitness MOT helps people to:

  • Understand how their current activity levels compare with others of a similar age.
  • Identify strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Learn how strength, balance and flexibility affect everyday activities.
  • Gain motivation and confidence to become more active.
  • Find suitable activities, support and exercise opportunities for local services.
  • Reduce risk of falling.

What happens during the assessment?

The Functional Fitness MOT is a relaxed and informal session carried out by trained staff. Participants complete a few simple assessments that look at:

  • Lower body strength
  • Balance and stability
  • Flexibility and mobility
  • Functional movement related to everyday tasks

Following the assessment, participants receive feedback and practical advice on maintaining or improving their strength, balance and overall wellbeing, along with a free goody bag, and simple ways to help yourself at home.

Who is it for?

The Functional Fitness MOT is suitable for adults aged 60+ who want to better understand their physical fitness and take positive steps towards maintaining their independence, health and quality of life. It is particularly useful for those who are looking to stay active, return to activity, or reduce their risk of falls.

No need to book! You can just turn up on the day to learn how small changes can help you stay stronger, steadier and more active for longer.
