Motivate

Activity Sessions for Adults with a Learning Disability

The Motivate team is part of the council’s re:fresh Healthy Lifestyles Team.

Motivate have a weekly timetable of activity sessions for adults with a learning disability.
Our sessions aim to help people lead an active lifestyle and improve their health and wellbeing.
Our staff are friendly and helpful and sessions are open to all abilities.
So, if you fancy trying something new, want to improve your fitness or just enjoy meeting other people, come along!

Here is some of the activities you can take part in:

Archery is good for balance, handeye co-ordination and upper body strength. The rules of archery keep it safe, so listen carefully to your instructor! We also have trained volunteers who will help or advise you. There are 2 sessions per week, suitable for all abilities. All equipment provided.

Cycling is low impact, so it’s easier on your joints than running or other high impact aerobic activities, but it still helps you get into shape. Motivate has a number of specialised bikes to suit a wider range of disabilities.

Dancing can reduce stress and tension and make you feel good. Our routines can also aid your memory and co-ordination.

Football improves your fitness and being part of a team can be lots of fun! It helps your concentration, coordination and gives your muscles and heart a work out.

Gym exercise is great if you want to get in shape. It can get your heart pumping, build muscle and increase your metabolism.

Gardening can help you get in touch with nature and yourself. It can feel great to be outdoors, learning a new skill and even growing your own food!

Swimming gives you a whole body work out. Because the water supports your body, you can do it without putting too much strain on your joints. It can relieve stress and make you feel energised. Whether you’re learning to swim or want to improve your stroke, all our pool sessions are led by a qualified swimming teacher.

Team Games develop your hand-eye co-ordination skills and team spirit! This session is active, but open to all abilities.

Walking is a sociable way to exercise and it’s free! Walking improves circulation, relieves stress and is a low impact way of keeping fit. Our staff and volunteers are qualified Walk Leaders.
There are 2 walks per week, for different abilities. You’ll need suitable footwear and clothing, because we walk whatever the weather!

MOTIVATE SESSIONS ARE £1* FOR residents of BLACKBURN WITH DARWEN and £2 for non residents (except walking).

Just bring your Leisure card when you attend (support staff are FREE but will need one as well)
